With an overall length of 33 meters, Long Tall Sally will be a special yacht. A sturdy, no-nonsense yacht designed for long voyages. With a well formed and uncompromised rig. Below decks, a fully outfitted accommodation that will ensure a comfortable stay on board.

Very seaworthy

Long Tall Sally is a design (by Dykstra & Partners) based on the well known Bestevaer series performance cruising yachts. It will be a very seaworthy, swift sailing yacht. The generous sailplan and 30 meters of waterline result in a cruising speed above 10 knots.

Distant destinations

The aluminium ketch will explore places well off the beaten track. These encompass; the Kamchatka Peninsula, Antarctica, Greenland, the Northwest Passage, Easter Island, Spitsbergen and the Galápagos Islands.

Shared ownership

Long Tall Sally will be sailed under the Dutch flag and ownership will be shared. This is the crux of the plan; the yacht will be owned by a number of people. The initiator of this project is Edo Ankum, who has spent several years at sea with his family. During this sailing trip onboard Sally Lightfoot, he met numeral other yachtsmen and noted the following trends:

• A large number of people do not use their yacht to the full.
• The use of the yacht does not match the cost.
• Maintenance is often considered a burden.
• Sailing with a limited crew is straining.
• Dream destinations remain out of reach.

Combined strength

Thus, the understanding grew that there must be other, more financially attractive options than the known concept of ‘one owner, one ship’. The solution is the combination of financial strength. This brings a large yacht within reach, with a professional crew and enticing destinations. With Long Tall Sally, the part-owners are enabled to sail in places their own yacht would be hard pressed to reach. In addition, the ketch’ seagoing behaviour is much more comfortable. The Yacht will be sailed by a Dutch crew with a sound nautical education. An additional advantage would be to be able to share the travel experiences with others. During the time that the owners are not using the yacht, she can be chartered, thus saving costs. Long Tall Sally will be made suitable for scientific research parties and can serve as a basis for camera teams.
