Maps on pirate attacks
Unosat produces maps illustrating pirate attacks in the Gulf of Aden and the ‘Somali’ Indian Ocean. Download their 2008 map: unosat_piracy_gulf_aden_2008. This map illustrates reported incidents of piracy in the Gulf of Aden in 2008 and was produced by UNOSAT in support of the ongoing humanitarian operations across the Horn of Africa, and in response to the UN Security Council Resolutions 1851, 1838 & 1816 (2008), and IMO resolution adopted 29 Nov. 2007 calling for increased monitoring of Somali pirate activity. Satellite imagery has been used in this analysis for the dectection of suspected hijacked vessel locations between the villages of Eyl & Hobyo. All piracy incident data has been obtained from open sources.
Unosat has not produced a 2009 map yet. It has produced a map and an analysis of the pirate attacks over the first 4 months of 2009.
The Piracy Report Centre (of the International Maritime Bureau) registrates pirate attacks around the globe. From their Kuala Lumpur offices, they generate a Live Piracy Map. This map shows all the piracy and armed robbery incidents reported to the IMB Piracy Reporting Centre during 2009. If exact coordinates are not provided, estimated positions are shown based on information provided. Zoom-in and click on the pointers to view more information of an individual attack.
